Hidden in Plain Sight: A Date Night at Yemen Restaurant

If there’s one thing I love about running Nordvest & More, it’s the tips I get from you. A few months ago, a follower reached out with a heartfelt plea: "Please try these two spots near my flat. I want them to stay in the neighborhood forever!" Side note: That woman actually ended up coming on one of my Fastelavnsbolle walks recently, which was so lovely. So, a few Fridays ago, my husband and I decided to take her advice.

We wanted a "Date Night Plus," that didnt just involve dinner and wine, so we started at Pool Pub (classic Nordvest vibe) for a few rounds of pool before heading over to Yemen Restaurant on Frederikssundsvej.

Walking up to Yemen Restaurant, you might hesitate. Their google maps profile are full covered in AI-generated photos of food and interiors, which probably would make you think (and me) "If the food is good, why the robots?" But remember: in NV, the best flavors are often hidden behind the most unassuming storefronts.

We arrived during Ramadan, an hour or two after Iftar. A lot of the Yemeni dishes we first tried to order (like numbers 6 and 7 on the menu) were already sold out. I took it as a good sign (even though it asked me for a lot of mental exercise since I had already made up my mind!): it most likely meant the food is fresh and delicious and people are eating it all up! We settled on two classics to share: one with Mutton and one with Chicken.

When the food arrived, we were floored. For the price, we expected modest portions. What we got was:

The Rice: Not just plain white rice, but a mountain of spiced, colorful grains. It came topped with a mix of caramelized onions, carrots, and raisins. (I’m not a raisin fan, so I got mine on the side, but my husband loved the sweetness they added).

The Meat: Both the mutton and the chicken were incredibly well-cooked—tender, falling off the bone, and perfectly seasoned.

The Salad: To balance out the heavy mountain of rice and meat, it came with a simple, fresh salad of cucumber, tomato, and iceberg lettuce. It was exactly the crisp, cooling crunch needed between bites of the spiced rice.

The Anjaro: We ordered two "Somalian sourdough pancakes." Being French, my immediate thought was "this is a very thick, delicious galette!" It was the perfect tool for scooping up the spicy, flavorful sauce served on the side.

The "Extra" Surprise: Just when we thought we had everything, two bowls of warm, simple "winter soup" appeared on the house. It was flavorful, comforting, and exactly what we needed.

The Verdict? I did order a Mango Smoothie that didn't quite hit the mark (it had a raspberry syrup at the bottom that made it a bit too sweet for me), but that’s a tiny detail in an otherwise "wow" meal.

We left feeling full, happy, and genuinely impressed by the value for money. It’s a chilled, no-frills spot that delivers massive flavor. If I hadn’t been told to go, I might have missed it—so now I’m passing that tip on to you.
