Walking the Collective Story of Nordvest

It actually started back in September with an email from Wonderful Copenhagen. They’d reached out to different people across the city’s outer neighborhoods—basically everyone except the center—to see if we could kickstart some new ways to get people to discover the areas that usually fly under the radar. The idea was to create activities that might, one day, give visitors a reason to wander outside the usual tourist loops and see the "real" Copenhagen.

In Nordvest, our little group met so many over the following months. We sat around tables at Dorthea’s, Thoravej29 and Demokrati Garage, debating what makes this place special and how to share it without losing its soul. Those months of brainstorming eventually led to the tour we did on March 14th, and honestly, seeing it finally come to life on the pavement was such a trip.

The tour itself was designed to feel like a transition. We started at the urban, gritty edge of Nørrebro at Urban Camper, moved through the industrial vibes of Flying Couch Brewery, and then into the community heart of Demokrati Garage. As we walked, the landscape started to shift. We stopped at Thoravej 29 to talk about the massive creative changes happening there and heard from Younes at Street Society about the youth culture that really keeps the neighborhood’s energy alive. By the time we reached the village-like calm near Utterslev Mose and tucked into Dorthea’s Bar for a final drink, it felt like we’d traveled through a hundred years of history in just a few hours.

What was so cool, though, wasn't just the stops—it was the people who showed up. We had such a mix: people who live right here in NV, others coming from all over Copenhagen, and even some who traveled from other parts of the country just for the day. There were friends catching up and mothers walking with their daughters.

Showing Nordvest to newcomers was awesome, obviously, but it was equally amazing to show it to people who have lived here for over a decade. Seeing someone realize a piece of knowledge they didn't know about their own street, or focus on something they usually just pass by every day, was a total highlight. It felt like we were a collective of stories being assembled on the spot; people were jumping in with their own memories and ideas, which made the whole thing feel like a living conversation rather than a lecture.

We ended up at Dorthea’s, and the conversation just kept going. I talked with so many of you about the neighborhood, about what it means to really know your own town, and what could be next for Nordvest & More. Mads and I have met up since then, and the plan is to keep this momentum going. We’re looking at doing these "big" tours a few times a year and extending our collaboration with the Utterslev Torvs Kulturforening and the festivals they hold there four times a year. So definitely stay tuned for that.

A huge thank you to Marie, Thomas, Younes, and the teams at Urban Camper and Flying Couch. You guys contributed so much of your time, and we literally could not have done this without you. We’re so excited to do it again, but also to bring in new people next time so we can keep showing different facets of the 'hood. Nordvest is always evolving, and we want the tours to reflect that—focusing on our roots and our "village" while embracing whatever comes next.
