Where to Get Your Bakery, Bun & Coffee Fix In and Around Nordvest

My go-to list of bakeries, cafés and coffee stops worth the detour (even if you're SUPER lazy that day) in Nordvest and just across the border — where to go for a proper bun, sometimes a good loaf, and coffee that's actually worth drinking!

Nordvest has its own bakery culture — Flere Fugle's sourdough, Skruens' tiny self-service counter, Kaffedepartementet's cosy upstairs area and downstairs tables in the sun — but some of the best bun-and-coffee stops are also just a few steps over the border, close enough to make the walk worth it. This list covers both: the neighbourhood regulars and the ones worth crossing the border for. Trying to keep this updated as spots open, close, or change hands!

Places (6)

  • Cafe Thoras

The café on the ground floor of Thoravej 29, Nordvest's creative community building — fresh pastries and other deliciousness baked from Nordic organic grain, Coffee Collective beans, and a daily green lunch dish. Built on ecology and seasonality, with house-pickled and fermented ingredients running through everything on the menu. Most things are made by the house cook of Thoravej 29, and on weekends Meyers take over and bake their own yumminess. Perfect café to work from during the week, and one of the best spots in town to sit outside when the sun is shining and Thoras opens its huge window to basically give you an outside living room.

  • Flere Fugle

A bakery, bistro and natural-wine bar that took over a refurbished garage on Rentemestervej in 2022, sharing yard space with Demokrati Garage. Pastries and La Cabra by day, sourdough pizza and To Øl by night. Flere Fugle is a neighborhood staple (with the owners having basically conquered the neighborhood, and soon the city), hosting many events a month, participating in workshops and markets alongside Demokrati Garage, and once a year the whole place becomes a jazz venue when their own Flere Fugle Jazz Festival takes over the summer weekend.

  • Kaffedepartementet

A specialty coffee roastery on Rentemestervej in a renovated industrial building, roasting Kenyan and Ethiopian beans on-site twice a week. The tebirkes here get called the best in Copenhagen — come for those and an espresso, and stay inside for some coziness or sit outside on the sunny tables on Rentemestervej for some quality people-watching.

  • Fovl

Open since 2016 as one of the first cafés built to give Nordvest a place to gather — it's still doing exactly that. Coffee alongside pastries from sister bakery Flere Fugle (Fovl was the OG place though!!). Mornings are for slow breakfasts and laptops; some evenings the tables clear for a concert instead.

  • Flok Kantine

The café tucked into the ground floor of BIBLIOTEKET on Rentemestervej, run by the Flere Fugle team — coffee, tea, good bread, sandwiches and a daily lunch dish, with bakery goods from their sister spots down the street. Genuinely kid-friendly, and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings it turns into fællesspisning: a simple, shared vegetarian meal open to anyone. The best part? Take a book from the library while you snack and have the coziest moment immersed in your book and deliciousness.

  • Flere Fugle Bageri og Butik

A natural extension of Flere Fugle's original bakery — shelves lined with wine, olive oil, coffee, the chai mix from Hindu de Chai, flour and semolina, canned goods, their own pickled vegetables, fresh produce, dairy, and the ceramics from Damhus you might recognize from their cafés. There are even low-waste bathroom essentials and a few thoughtful gift items — including local artist Argentum's linoleum prints of Nordvest motifs. The bakery classics are still there too — crispy buns, pastries, and weekend bread to go. It's the kind of place you pop in for sourdough and leave with olive oil, cheese, and a birthday gift.
