6 Ways to Spend an Afternoon in Nordvest

If you ask a tourist guide where to spend an afternoon in Copenhagen, you will usually get pointed straight toward the Nyhavn crowds or the shopping lines on Strøget. But if you want to see where the city actually creates, drinks, and lives, you head to Nordvest. The neighborhood carries a totally different energy—former industrial courtyards turned into bakeries, local workshops sharing walls with art spaces, and neighborhood bars that prefer a slow afternoon drift over a quick turnaround.

To help you navigate the neighborhood without getting caught out by early closing times or awkward gaps between stops, we built six distinct afternoon routes for the weekend. Whether you are after street art and gallery walls, an uninterrupted afternoon catch-up with a friend, or a slow walk ending with ice cream and a quiet drink, pick the vibe that matches your day and let Nordvest do the rest.

Saturday

The Saturday Curious Route

For the ones who want their afternoon shaped by what's on the walls. Start early at Thoravej 29 to drop into Room Room (@room_room_ahc), the contemporary art space on the ground floor, before it closes at 3pm. Right around the corner is Andersen's Contemporary (@andersenscontemporary), Nordvest's contemporary art anchor, which also wraps up around 3pm. From there, lose twenty minutes in the stacks at Storrs Antikvariat (@storrsantikvariat) for antiquarian books and secondhand finds—they are open till 4pm—then take a clock-free walk along Rentemestervej and Møntmestervej to take in Gadegalleriet, Scandinavia's largest open-air gallery. Loop back for a coffee at Cafe Thoras (@thoras_29) inside Thoravej 29, and finish things out with a casual drink down at Bjørnen og de Tolv Haner (@bjornenogdetolvhaner).

The Saturday Social Route

For the ones meeting a friend, happy to let the afternoon drift. Kick things off at Nordic Health House (@nordichealthhouse) for a coffee or a class if you are feeling it, keeping in mind they close at 2pm. Next, grab warm, freshly baked Persian flatbread at Naan Barbari—it is absurdly affordable for how good it is. Move on to Vin de Table (@vin_de_table) to browse natural wine, as they stay open Saturdays till 7pm, before settling into AUTOPOUL (@autopoul), the stripped-down, "so Nordvest" wine spot where you can sit for a while. If the afternoon runs particularly long, take a pitstop at Pico Pizza for dinner and end at Gamma NV (@gamma_nv), a Danish craft brewery open till 2am.

The Saturday Slow Route

For the ones who want silence, a browse, and a treat at the end. Catch the narrow afternoon window at Høtoft (@hoetoft_) for Central and Eastern European wine—go early, as they close at 2pm. Walk over to Flere Fugle Bageri og Butik (@flerefugle_bageri_og_butik) to pick up pantry finds and a pastry from a proper bakery-shop, then spend a quiet moment at Biblioteket Rentemestervej (@biblioteketrentemestervej), where it is worth actually borrowing a few books while you are there rather than just browsing. Grab ice cream at Nøgvendigv'Is (@noedvendigvis), which is really the whole point of the afternoon, and if you are still going, close out with a drink at Pool-Pub (@poolpub_cph) for some games or people watching, open till 3am.

Sunday

The Sunday Curious Route

For the ones who still want their afternoon shaped by art and walls. Start at Biblioteket Rentemestervej (@biblioteketrentemestervej) to borrow a few books before leaving, as they are open till 4pm. Wandering the rest of the cultural building at Thoravej 29 (@thoravej29) is well worth it until 5pm, followed by a coffee break at Kaffedepartementet (@kaffedepartementet), open till 6. Take your time enjoying the murals along Rentemestervej and Møntmestervej at Gadegalleriet whenever it suits, then find a comfortable seat at kima (@kima_forfanden) to finish out the day.

The Sunday Social Route

For the ones catching up on a Sunday. Begin at Nordic Health House (@nordichealthhouse) for a coffee or a class if you are feeling it, keeping in mind they close at 2pm. Grab lunch at Gaza Grill, and then head to Bodega Konkylie (@bodega.konkylie), the chillest bar in Nordvest. Afterwards, drift over to AUTOPOUL (@autopoul), open till 10pm with no reason to rush, or wrap up at Åbenbar NV (@aabenbar), open till 11pm for a solid last stop: it's Sunday after all.

The Sunday Slow Route

For the ones who want a bakery, an ice cream, and one quiet drink. Head to Flere Fugle Bageri og Butik (@flerefugle_bageri_og_butik), open till 4pm just like Saturday, then swing by Nøgvendigv'Is (@noedvendigvis) for that same reliable ice cream stop. You can linger at Storm B for a pastry, a warm meal or a first drink in the afternoon. Do a pitstop at Smedetoften, and if you're lucky, stumble upon Neighbor Sunday, before eventually making your way all the way down to Utterslev Torv for a bit of nature, and finish at Dortheasbar (@dortheasbar), which stays open till 11pm on a Sunday so there is still plenty of time for one last glass.

The beauty of spending an afternoon in Nordvest is that there is no rigid way to do it. You can follow one of these routes stop-for-stop, or simply use them as an anchor to drift between industrial courtyards and green corners as the sunlight shifts.
